Choir for carol services 2003
Thanks to enthusiasm and willingness to make the carol services in St. Giles
Cropwell Bishop and St. Michael’s Elton truly rousing for the Christmas
celebration, a choir is in training under the leadership of Steve Gelsthorpe
and Tony Hall, both of Cropwell Bishop. In addition a group of young instrumentalists,
several of whom are in school bands, is making ready to accompany some of the
carols as well as contributing to the Christmas spirit with numbers to be played
at the beginning and end of the service. This means that such carol services
are not to be missed in the run-up to Christmas Day. They are reminding us of
‘the reason for the season’. We look forward to full churches to
offer praise to God.
Children and Christmas Parents of younger children please note arrangements
for suitable services to join in over the season.
On Sunday 14 December at 11am there is a Crib Service in All Saints’ Granby
when the children themselves will dress up and tell the story in mime, accompanied
by readings and carols. Also on Sun 14th the chapel in Cropwell Bishop has a
Nativity and Carols act of worship, again involving the children of the Seekers
group. Both the parish church and the chapel join for this. On Sun 21st a number
of carol services take place, very suitable for children from school age upwards.
Equally this follows for the two carol services at 6.30pm on Christmas Eve,
in St. Giles Cropwell Bishop and the Chapel in Cropwell Butler. Finally, on
Christmas morning at 11am there is an All Age service in St. Giles Cropwell
Bishop when at least three generations - children, parents and grandparents
- are invited to come for an hour to share in celebrating the special birthday
and thinking about what it means for us. Of course you are welcome to come to
any of these, regardless of whether they happen to be in your own local church,
or elsewhere in the Wiverton Group.
On January 1 1974 Robin Coles took over playing the organ in St. Andrew’s at the request of Molly Crowe, then 60 who wanted a break. Molly had played the organ for at some fifteen years. No doubt when she retired she was thanked for her years as organist. On January 4 2004 at 9.30am we are planning a Celebration and Thanksgiving at the All Age Holy Communion to mark Robin’s thirty years achievement; not setting out to be a record - but all the same it is worthy of marking with a special mention and an opportunity for today’s worshippers, and others who choose, to join together in thanking God. We do this in token of one another - for the gifts God gives us and the ways we make use of them to benefit the community. After the service all are welcome to stay on for an early-in-the-day glass of wine (or coffee and toast!). Andrew Wigram
Those of us who have attended worship at Tythby in the past year will be aware that the church now has a set of new frontals for each liturgical colour. This has come about thanks to the seamstress skills and hours of work of Edna Stanley and Hazel Morgan [Langar and Barnstone parish]. They make a beautiful and refreshing statement as you walk in, and they add to the sense of seasonal celebration through the year. The church council has arranged for an act of dedication to take place on Sunday 1 February 2004 - Candlemas – during the 11am Morning Prayer service. In addition to the local congregation guests are warmly welcome.
In case any of you who rode, or supported financially, or helped out at the stations have not received any acknowledgement of your efforts please ac cept our very grateful thanks. It was a more than usually successful event judging by the cheques paid to the charity, and the 50% total returned for the contributing church’s use. Cropwell Bishop’s effort raised over £500 - double last year’s figure. Also St. Giles collected £50 at the Open Tower evening in July when over 100 visitors came. An improved queuing/ticket system is to be introduced in 2004 to ease the waiting time.
