Prayer for our world
As the reality of war is chastening nations of west and east alike, and
especially the Middle East, many of us feel there is nothing to do except
pray. And as we, once again, mark the season of Passion-tide
and Easter, we are drawn to Jesus, and ‘the mystery of suffering’.
Through prayer we come alongside the victims of war in the Middle East or
in Africa. We also remember relatives much closer home who are anxious
for loved ones in the war zones.
Thirsting on the cross,
your Son shared the reproach of the oppressed
and carried the sins of all:
in him, O God, may the despairing find you,
the afflicted gain life
and the whole creation know its true king.
Amen
Mothers’ Union – the reality
What is your impression of the Mothers’ Union?
Out of date? Elderly? Dwindling? Tea parties and knitting?
Look at the facts about it.
• Mothers’ Union is the largest Christian charity in the world.
• There are over one million members in 70 countries worldwide.
• There are more than 300 registered workers around the world.
• The average age of the London headquarters’ staff is 36.
• One thousand of its British membership are male.
• It has been a leading voice for debt cancellation, joining the Jubilee
campaign.
• There are members in England working in 48 hospitals as visitors.
• Over one thousand members work in prisons.
If you would like to contribute to this work by joining up you can be sure
of a welcoming group, and the knowledge that you are contributing to something
decidedly worthwhile. Add all the above to what happens locally in Southwell
Diocese, and in the Wiverton Group – and you really will have to change your
opinion! It’s worth joining....

Announcements
Sunday April 27 Group Service of Thanksgiving
As you will notice from the back page, all churches are encouraged to come
to a single Group service on this day for a celebration of thanksgiving
for the Reverend Maurice Richardson’s many years of help and support in leading
services in the churches of the Wiverton Group. This goes back for more
years than most can remember.
Maurice has felt it is time to withdraw from the regular rota although he
is still willing to fill in on occasions. This brings a sense of regret
to all who have enjoyed his ministry, always conveying understanding,
warmth and humour. As a mark of affection and respect we invite any
who have appreciated his active years in these parishes to come for this event.
It is our chance to thank him, and thank God for him.
Donations towards a thank you gift will be gladly received by the churchwardens
of your parish church, and should be handed in before Easter.

Village residents, and any others interested, are invited to join in this
afternoon to explore the village’s heritage. Interests will include:
Display of photographs illustrating village history
Picture Quiz for the family. How well do you know your village?
Video viewing: Learn what Cropwell Bishop used to be like from memories
of villagers going back two generations.
Meet and talk with people with memories of the village who are knowledgeable
about the local heritage.
Bring any Cropwell documents or photos for others to see.
Express your views about a possible village Heritage Centre.
Enjoy refreshments provided by WI.
Heritage Centre The Church Parish Room, opposite the Post Office,
is a building needing a use for the future; If it does not find one it will
have to be demolished. The room is an example of village heritage and
it could be repaired and restored to become our Heritage Centre.
Village opinion is being canvassed:
• Do you value this building as village heritage?
• Should it be preserved for future generations?
• Do you back the idea of making it a Heritage Centre?

24hr Fast for World Famine
Seven young ladies of Year Six, Colston Bassett Primary School raised between
them £152.68 for starving children across Africa. During the first
week of Lent Sammy Whitt, Polly Murray, Gemma Jennings, Anna Godsmart,
Rachel Lambert, Casey Cowen and Emma Bevin took part in a 24 hour sponsored
fast from midday on Friday [March 7 - 8]. This was in response
to a challenge from World Vision, the international aid and development charity,
targetted at young people throughout Britain.
The group first got together to watch a promotional video as well
as a Live Aid video featuring Bob Geldorf’s Africa trip. All of the
participants felt happy to have helped those less fortunate than themselves,
and realised towards the end of the fast how hard it must be for the people
of Africa.
Congratulations on such a good response and achievement! The money
raised is enough to provide a farmer with two oxen plus food for a child for
two months (World Vision figures).
